About the Role

The Browser Clients team oversees the development, maintenance and improvement of the TypeScript and React framework that powers the front-end web experiences of www.twitch.tv and some of our other client applications. As a centralized front-end platform team with Twitch developers as our primary customers, Browser Clients is responsible for creating a safe, productive and enjoyable developer experience for the product teams that build exciting features for Twitch users. In addition to hands-on development to improve the framework, our broad responsibilities cover everything from documentation and new developer onboarding, developing tools and utilities, encouraging coding best practices, managing the build and release process and providing support to teams who own Twitch end-user experiences on the web.

As a Software Engineering Manager on the Browser Clients team, you will provide technical leadership, insights, vision and planning to guide the future of front-end web development at Twitch, directly manage at least 4 software engineers and help facilitate the day-to-day operations of the team. As a technical leader, you will be expected to gain understanding of our overall development stack and tooling infrastructure to help us improve it and to provide mentorship and career growth for the engineers that report to you.

You will report directly to the Senior Engineering Manager for Browser Clients and will share operational, technical and people management responsibility for the team. Most of the team is based in Orange County, CA near our office in Irvine, but we are also a distributed team with many employees working remotely throughout the US.

For this role you would ideally work within a short travel distance to one of our Twitch offices (Irvine, Seattle, New York City, Austin), but working remotely with occasional travel for face-to-face interactions and team building will also be considered.

You Will:

  • Manage and grow at at least four engineers that will report directly to you
  • Share the responsibility of the day-to-day operations of the Browser Clients team, which includes prioritizing engineering work, running Agile ceremonies and ensuring progress is made against our roadmap
  • Partner with the director and other engineering leads to guide the mission, vision and strategy of the team and the technical direction of our platform
  • Collaborate with teams from across the company on Twitch-wide programs covering security, data governance, accessibility, and other high-impact central tech initiatives
  • Gather feedback from customers to determine important engineering work
  • Serve as an escalation to our on-call capacity as needed

You Have:

  • 2+ years of work experience as an engineering manager supervising at least 3 engineers.
  • 5+ years of experience in JavaScript-based front-end software development and toolchains
  • Experience running the day-to-day operations of software engineering projects of significant complexity.
  • Experience hiring and developing engineers under your supervision.
  • Experience gathering feedback from customers to inform engineering prioritization.

Bonus Points

  • Prior experience developing projects using TypeScript
  • Prior experience working in popular front-end UI frameworks like React
  • Prior experience working in large monorepo projects with many contributors
  • Scrum or other Agile certification

The base pay range for this position in Colorado, Connecticut and Washington is $195,850 - $239,360 yr and in New York City is $215,370 - $263,230 yr. Pay is based on market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A sign-on payment and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
