What Expel is looking for in applicants

At Expel, we craft experiences that clarify understanding, improve decision-making, and help people work better. UX isn't an afterthought, it's a critical differentiator with champions at the highest levels. No politics, no BS. Just a team of exceptionally thoughtful, dedicated professionals who want the best experience for our customers.

We're looking for a Principal growth designer to join a new cross-functional team focusing on product-led growth and free trials. If you're the kind of designer who loves analyzing analytics and qualitative data, knows how to get creative with experiments, and designs engaging, personalized onboarding flows, we want to hear from you! This project is one of our highest priorities in 2022 and beyond, with direct impact on revenue. We're bringing design on at the beginning, so you'll have time to research, learn the space, and develop your own ideas and insights before we write any code.

What Expel can do for you

Many companies promise UX a seat at the table, but Expel delivers. Our designers take a lead role in discovery, research, and feature definition and are deeply involved during development, rollout, and adoption.

We'll also:

  • Nurture your talent with a humane, collaborative team culture and a manager who's got your back. We're serious about inclusion, diversity, and fostering a workplace where you can be yourself and speak your mind without fear.
  • Put you on a defined promotion path, as a people manager or technical leader.
  • Support your professional development with a generous yearly conference and training budget.
  • Give regular feedback on your performance via weekly 1:1s, quarterly reviews, and formal and informal critique sessions with the UX team.
  • Provide regular opportunities to talk directly with customers and do high-quality research.
  • Back up your design vision with a group of fast, collaborative developers eager to experiment with you.

What you can do for Expel

In this role, you'll craft a compelling, personalized free trial experience that pulls customers into our product sooner, and gets them to those critical "a-ha" moments faster. Rome wasn't built in a day, of course, so you'll start by conducting research and experiments to learn what works—and what doesn't!

You'll also:

  • Conduct user and market research to understand the personas, use cases, and jobs to be done.
  • Synthesize research insights and present findings to team members and leadership.
  • Work closely with engineers so you grasp the technical constraints and opportunities for creative experimentation.
  • Use qualitative and quantitative data to make design decisions and generate hypotheses we can experiment on.
  • Design lean experiments to test hypotheses, measure outcomes, and iterate rapidly.
  • Collaborate with marketing, sales, and customer success to ensure we're targeting growth experiments to the right customers and prospects, and that we're able to effectively process leads.

What you should bring with you

  • Strong UX design practice, particularly in research, prototyping, interaction design, design systems, and workshop facilitation.
  • Experience designing task-based UI, such as SaaS, e-commerce, or productivity software. Experience with onboarding design or product-led growth is a plus.
  • Portfolio examples that demonstrate lean UX experimentation with measurable outcomes and a strong visual design sense.
  • Familiarity with analytics and usage metrics, retention data, and benchmarks.
  • Effective low-fi sketching and prototyping as a means to get feedback and iterate quickly—and the willingness to throw it all out and try again.
  • Clear articulation of the design problem, the tradeoffs you've made in your solution, and the impact of different approaches.
  • A high degree of comfort making decisions without all the information, and learning from the inevitable wrong turns.

Education and experience

Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.

Work location

Can be 100% remote in mainland US time zones.
