What Notion is looking for in applicants

About Us:

We're on a mission to make it possible for every person, team, and company to be able to tailor their software to solve any problem and take on any challenge. Computers may be our most powerful tools, but most of us can't build or modify the software we use on them every day. At Notion, we want to change this with focus, design, and craft.

We've been working on this together since 2016, and have customers like Pixar, Mitsubishi, Figma, Plaid, Match Group, and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.

About The Role:

You’ll define and implement the strategic direction of Notion’s data platform. You’ll build a team of talented engineers who will design and own foundational data products that are critical for the company (from streaming infrastructure to ingestion, orchestration, ETL frameworks, experiments, ML model serving, data discovery and interactive analytics). You will aim to empower every team at Notion to drive their decisions using data.

What You'll Do:

  • You'll hire, challenge and and retain a diverse, inclusive and highly effective team of engineers; you'll ensure engineers regularly receive feedback and achieve their personal and professional goals
  • You'll drive the vision and roadmap of Data Platform to speed up Notion's data-driven decision making process
  • You'll work cross-functionally with partners from the Data Science, Data Engineering, Product, Go-to-Market, Legal and Finance organizations to deliver short- and long-term impact
  • You'll work with others to shape how Notion's engineering organization and data ecosystem work — you'll help develop our technical practices, recruiting and onboarding strategy, planning and prioritization process, and more.

What We're Looking For:

  • You have lead or managed data or infrastructure-focused engineering teams, particularly ones that own a wide swath of software platforms (hosted or built in-house)
  • You've experienced the challenges of scaling and re-architecting data platforms and infrastructure through orders of magnitude of growth
  • You have a deep background with big data compute, storage, and best practices that you can ask the right questions of your team, balance technology and people concerns, and make hard tradeoffs
  • You have built, or are committed to building, diverse and inclusive teams; you value empathetic and direct communication and foster environments that are at once collaborative, empowering, supportive, and challenging—ones where people do their best work.

Bonus Points:

  • You have worked at a fast-growing start-up, a SaaS company or are eager to contribute in such an environment (being a current Notion user would be great!)
  • You have hands-on experience in designing and building highly scalable and reliable data pipelines using BigData stack (e.g Kafka, Flink, Spark, Airflow, DBT, Parquet/ORC, Protobuf/Thrift, etc)
  • You've heard of computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and others—and understand why we're big fans of their work.

Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Notion.

We do not discriminate in hiring or any employment decision based on race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or other applicable legally protected characteristic.
