What Notion is looking for in applicants

About Us

We're on a mission to make it possible for every person, team, and company to be able to tailor their software to solve any problem and take on any challenge. Computers may be our most powerful tools, but most of us can't build or modify the software we use on them every day. At Notion, we want to change this with focus, design, and craft.

We've been working on this together since 2016, and have customers like Pixar, Mitsubishi, Figma, Plaid, Match Group and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.

About The Role

You'll lead the engineering group responsible for getting Notion into the hands of more users, driving both the product and the engineering behind key business levers. The goal of this group is to ensure more and more users are connected to Notion's product value, through areas including enterprise features, performance marketing and marketing technology, monetization, payments, and internationalization. You'll recruit and manage engineers and engineering managers, drive the growth vision and strategy together with your go-to-market, data science, product, and design colleagues, and help develop Notion's engineering organization as a whole.

What You'll Do

  • You'll build and manage a diverse and inclusive team of engineers and engineering managers working on product features and tools to maximize the reach of Notion’s product.
  • You'll recruit, coach, and develop engineers and (primarily) engineering managers; you'll ensure people in your group are regularly receiving feedback and that they are making rapid progress on personal and professional goals.
  • You'll help drive the strategy and vision for growth at Notion, working closely with go-to-market, product management, and design.
  • You'll be responsible for maintaining a high quality bar for everything your team ships.
  • You'll build a culture of fast iteration and shipping.
  • You'll work with others to shape how Notion's engineering organization operates—you'll help develop our technical practices, recruiting and onboarding strategy, planning and prioritization process, and more.

What We're Looking For

  • You've managed an engineering organization with more than thirty engineers, multiple engineering teams, and end-to-end responsibility for a user-facing product with substantial surface area.
  • You have built, or are committed to building, diverse and inclusive teams; you value empathetic and direct communication and foster environments that are at once collaborative, empowering, supportive, and challenging—ones where people do their best work.
  • You have a track record of managing teams in growth and related areas, with a sufficiently broad engineering and product background to manage the wide variety of teams in the area (spanning traditional growth, to payments, internationalization, and enterprise).
  • You have a sufficiently deep background in product and technology that you can ask the right questions of your team, balance product, technology, and people concerns, and make hard tradeoffs.

Bonus Points

  • You have managed engineering teams at startups before, particularly during periods of rapid growth and organizational change.
  • You have experience rolling out engineering and management practices and processes—e.g., code review, performance reviews, and levels and ladders—where they didn't exist before.
  • You've managed engineering groups with teams spread across multiple locations.
  • You've heard of computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and others—and understand why we're big fans of their work.

Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Notion.
