What Notion is looking for in applicants

About Us:

We're on a mission to make it possible for every person, team, and company to be able to tailor their software to solve any problem and take on any challenge. Computers may be our most powerful tools, but most of us can't build or modify the software we use on them every day. At Notion, we want to change this with focus, design, and craft.

We've been working on this together since 2016, and have customers like Pixar, Mitsubishi, Figma, Plaid, Match Group, and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.

About The Role:

Since the launch of Notion, the company has been on a mission to make toolmaking ubiquitous - from wikis to documents, notes, tasks, databases, etc. A strong product intuition and focus on users have helped achieve adoption across businesses of all sizes. Today, millions of users rely on Notion's building blocks to get their work done.

As Notion continues to grow, there is a unique opportunity to help the company scale and use data to accelerate its decision making process. This is where you come in - to define and implement the strategic direction for the newly-created Data Engineering function. Your team will work closely with partners throughout the company, understand their needs and provide key datasets and insights to guide their roadmaps. You will play an essential role in Notion's growth trajectory.

What You'll Achieve:

  • You'll hire, challenge and and retain a diverse, inclusive and highly effective team of data engineers
  • You'll drive the vision and roadmap of Data Engineering to speed up Notion's data-driven decision making process
  • You'll design and build trusted, reliable and timely datasets, metrics and ETL pipelines that are critical to the health and direction of the company
  • You'll work cross-functionally with partners from Data Science, Product, Business, IT and Engineering organizations to deliver short- and long-term impact
  • You'll cultivate an environment of technical excellence, predictable delivery and personal growth for your team
  • You'll work with others to shape how Notion's data ecosystem works — from data infrastructure to data engineering, product, business and data science. You'll help develop and advocate for data democratization, self-serve services and tools, roadmap and prioritization process, and more.

Skills You'll Need to Bring:

  • You have managed data engineering teams with a record for shipping high-quality data products. You nurture collaborative, supportive and challenging environments where engineers grow and do their best work
  • You inspire others and are comfortable driving the vision for a nascent data engineering function and ecosystem
  • You effectively communicate business needs and technical details to a diverse audience
  • You have hands-on experience shipping scalable data solutions in the cloud (e.g AWS, GCP, Azure), across multiple data stores (e.g Snowflake, Redshift, Hive, SQL/NoSQL, columnar storage formats) and methodologies (e.g dimensional modeling, data marts, star/snowflake schemas)
  • You embrace cross-functional work. You proactively collect and prioritize needs across multiple business verticals, build strong partnerships and deliver solutions that gracefully evolve as requirements change

Nice to Haves:

  • You have worked at a fast-growing start-up, a SaaS company or are eager to contribute in such an environment (being a current Notion user would be great!)
  • You have hands-on experience in designing and building highly scalable and reliable data pipelines using BigData stack (e.g Airflow, DBT, Spark, Hive, Parquet/ORC, Protobuf/Thrift, etc)
  • You have directly worked with product, go-to-market or finance teams

Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Notion.
