What Openai is looking for in applicants

About the team and role

The goal of our People team is to hire, engage, and retain world-class talent who will safely build and deploy universally beneficial AGI. In this role, you will steward our day-to-day HR operations, ensuring that our HR systems, processes, and policies are up-to-date, relevant, and representative of our values. More than managing these disparate systems and processes, we hope that you would become the careful architect of their current and future shapes; pushing the boundary of conventional HR practices, where appropriate and where needed, to make something better than before.

We are looking for someone who prioritizes thoughtful system interface and “just-in-time” design to create understandable and meaningful human-centric interactions. For example: how can we automatically surface information to employees at just the right time when it is most relevant, impactful, and how can we do it as unobtrusively and elegantly as possible?

This role will also serve as a subject matter expert on benefits, immigration, and general HR compliance. In this capacity, our HR Operations Manager will ensure that our benefits and compensation are competitive, our immigration processes run smoothly, and that all applicable required filings and testing are complete and successful.

In this role you will:

  • Design and implement delightful employee experiences across our systems
  • Analyze and utilize data to make informed and educated decisions
  • Support our employees directly and through our systems
  • Manage our HR stack (software, systems, and process)
  • Benchmark and manage our total rewards program(s)
  • Ensure Immigration records and process accuracy
  • Support and administer our benefits programs
  • Complete regular compliance and filings
  • Ensure data integrity and accuracy
  • Own your impact

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Intense curiosity
  • Love of learning
  • Customer-first mindset
  • Design thinking and problem-solving
  • Clarity, approachability, and precision in communication
  • Understanding of the employee lifecycle; from pre-onboarding to off-boarding and everything in between
  • Knowledgeable understanding and experience with:
    • Standard annual HR compliance
    • HR systems management
    • Benefits administration
    • US immigration
    • Total rewards

We think you’ll thrive in this role if you:

  • Enjoy solving challenging problems. When there isn’t a clear solution, you take the time to understand the root complexities of a problem and work to find a holistic solution.
  • Create innovative solutions. You understand the value of innovation and use it to great effect, where needed and when appropriate.
  • Care about the human. Everything we do is in service to making OpenAI a great place to work for our colleagues. When we need to make decisions, we start with the human impact and prioritize making that impact and experience as wonderful as possible.
  • Care about details. The key to success in this role is a love of details. From spreadsheet accuracy to careful craftsmanship in policy, the small parts – even the parts no one else sees – matter.
  • Want to make something really great. The bar is high, but so too is the opportunity to make a difference.

P.S. Hi, it's me, the hiring manager for this role. I know cover letters are considered a bit outdated, but I do think they are helpful and important, and I do enjoy reading them so please take the time to write one if this role is interesting to you. I'd love to learn more about why this role excites you and why you feel there is a fit between your experience and this role. Looking forward to it!
