About the Team

The Payments team at Airbnb is responsible for everything related to settling money in Airbnb’s global marketplace. We build technology that powers Airbnb’s massive daily transaction volume to collect payments from guests and distribute payouts to hosts. Our goal is to make the Payment experience on Airbnb as delightful, magical, intuitive, and easy as possible.

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a full stack team that is responsible for paying out to millions of hosts with tens of billions of dollars every year globally. The team is also responsible for all host payment engagement products including payment method management, account and financial management. The team’s vision is to make Airbnb the platform of choice by offering the payout ease, flexibility, and control hosts want. Airbnb is focusing on getting back to its roots to best serve our community. Payout is at the center to earn the trust from our host community and to build a strong Airbnb brand. You will have the opportunity to lead the team to design, build and maintain a highly scalable and reliable async processing system to ensure timeliness and completeness of payout disbursement.  You will also have the opportunity to work with a team of product managers, data scientists, designers, to build long term vision, team roadmap, and strategy to meet the ever growing product needs from our hosts. Host payout has a much broader impact beyond the engineering team. You will need to closely collaborate with cross functional partners from finance, trust, compliance, treasury, and tax to ensure every penny can be paid to our hosts smoothly. 

Your Responsibilities

  • Day-to-day, you’ll be responsible for making sure the engineering team is delivering while adapting to all the changes that come along as projects go forward.
  • High interaction rate with your cross-functional peers (product, design, data science, research, and more) to develop strategy, long-term goals, and execution plans to get there. 
  • You’ll be responsible for the career growth of your overall team internally at Airbnb - everything from 1:1’s to career progression plans and whole team career forecasts. 
  • You’ll be intimately involved in recruiting and working both with our internal recruiting team, our M&A team, as well as investing in growing your team directly. 
  • You’ll make sure the quality of the engineering efforts are always exceptional by setting up the correct processes and quality control checks for the team to execute within and you’ll identify new technologies and skill sets to bring into the team to keep the team moving forward on new challenges. 
  • You’ll help evaluate vendors and participate in key decisions for buy vs. build to ensure our business is set up for future growth.

 

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of relevant engineering work experience and 2+ hands-on technical management experience.
  • Experience with architectural patterns of large, high-scale applications. Experience building and leading platforms is a plus.
  • Retained, mentored and hired senior engineers and leaders with a track record of building productive, world-class engineering teams. 
  • Effectively worked with senior leadership in setting strategic 6+ month direction.
  • Experience with effectively creating alignments with multiple teams and operating well in ambiguity. 
  • Track record in partnering with recruiting to build incredible engineering teams.
  • Actively coached and mentored team members in their careers.
  • Been actively involved in setting product strategy.
  • Consistently made culture choices that positively impact all of engineering.
  • Shipped several large scale projects with multiple dependencies across teams.
  • Payments experience is a plus, but not required

The starting base pay for this role is between $190,000 and $245,000. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: education, experience, and skills. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
