Senior Back End Java Engineer

Job Type: Fulltime

Department: Engineering

We’re the Promoted Inventory (PI) team at OpenTable, and we’re looking for a backend Java engineer.

OpenTable is a large marketplace of diners and restaurants, and the PI team builds a suite of groundbreaking advertising products that allows thousands of restaurants to drive diners to their restaurants. The projects we work on have high visibility in the organization, including from our CEO, Debby Soo.

We are committed to helping restaurants navigate the Covid pandemic by curating new and better user experiences and products for restaurants to connect with the millions of diners who use OpenTable.

You, a Java engineer a few years into your career, will be responsible for sound technical execution through hands-on development, automated testing, and prototyping of robust advertising and marketing products. You will ship and support features used daily by our restaurant partners to engage diners in real time, and help drive revenue for both OpenTable and the restaurants.

Our applications are written in modern Java, using PostgreSQL as our main database service, to provide stable, scalable and maintainable services to our customers. We use Kafka as our streaming messaging platform, a Spring-based framework for rapid service development, and we run our production environment on Kubernetes.

You’ll help us:

  • Improve our existing applications to meet new requests from restaurants and internal users
  • Write completely new services and features that handle high traffic volumes and integrate with the rest of the OpenTable platform
  • Grow as a team by contributing your ideas and experience
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and our dedicated frontend team
  • Help restaurants overcome the Covid pandemic
  • Deliver impactful initiatives that improve the lives of restaurateurs and diners

You’ll fit right in if you:

  • Have 5+ years in software engineering and 3+ years of Java programming experience.
  • Have experience building high volume, distributed systems
  • Are experienced in refactoring code, optimizing software, debugging, and writing tests with phenomenal code coverage
  • Have proven debugging and analytical skills in generating result oriented metrics and dashboards.
  • Are disciplined at unit, integration, and acceptance testing.
  • Have strong CS fundamentals, have a deep understanding of data structures and OO design.
  • Have an empathetic approach and enjoy working with developers, designers and product owners of all career levels
  • See communication as the cornerstone of building solid applications
  • Like collaborating across teams to find the best solutions
  • Are a self starter and OK with working remotely, while not hesitating to reach out when you need a pairing partner or second opinion

Please consider applying if this role sounds interesting to you even if you don’t meet all the requirements.

We believe in a healthy work-life balance, and that teams with people from a diverse set of backgrounds build the best end user experiences.
