About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced design leader who is passionate about mentorship and building a culture of collaboration and trust among designers. In this role, you’ll support the personal and professional growth of a small team of extraordinary product designers, and shape the next generation by defining and building our internship and apprenticeship programs. You'll partner directly with the Head of Design and Design Operations to refine our global design process to consistently achieve the highest level of craft and execution.

This is a role for a people-focused manager who loves mentorship, craft, and can roll up their sleeves to support their team if needed. You'll think equally about how to grow the designers on your team, the strategic direction of our product, and the process we use to design outstanding software quickly. You should possess excellent people skills, a genuine desire to help your team grow, a good eye for design, and the ability to identify and nurture good designers. 

What You’ll Do

  • Identify, coach, and mentor up-and-coming designers. You will attract design talent to the team, hire, grow, retain, and promote designers
  • Partner directly with our Head of Design and Head of Design Operations to grow and shape Ramp’s product design team, processes, and our culture
  • Be directly involved in establishing a diverse hiring pipeline and process that eliminates biases and incorporates different perspectives
  • Evolve Ramp design’s leveling, hiring, onboarding, and career progression criteria and methodology
  • Lead the development of our design internship and apprenticeship program to mentor and shape the next generation of product designers
  • Provide professional advice, mentorship, and direction to designers across all pods 
  • Work with Principal Designers and other managers across product and engineering to drive strategy, process, and align team objectives
  • Collaborate with the rest of the design team to evolve our long-term product vision, design systems, brand guidelines, and internal design collaboration process

What You Need

  • Minimum 7 years of tech/startup or digital product agency experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience managing teams of designers
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
    • Proven record of mentoring up-and-coming designers
    • Demonstrated experience creating and growing design teams
  • Demonstrated experience as an IC in various forms.
    • Mastery of Product Design software (Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD)
    • Demonstrated experience with end-to-end (hybrid UX and UI) product design
    • Experience in building and shipping applications or software
    • Experience owning products from start to finish, working with developers and PMs
  • Extraordinary eye for detail and experience providing feedback
    • Strong understanding of UX principles and workflows and the process that leads to great design outcomes.
    • Strong background in visual/interaction design, UX/UI, branding & identity, and typography.
    • Mastery of low and high-fidelity prototyping tools and methods, and their use in UX Research.
