What you can do for Expel

  • Guide the daily work of up to 7 software engineers working on one or two teams.

  • Collaborate with the PM, UX, and Quality representatives on your feature teams to align and contribute to the team strategy, set expectations on delivery, engage in healthy dialogue, and ship great software that achieves the team’s goals.

  • Provide coaching and feedback to engineers. You’re passionate about understanding the people on your team and their career journeys, and you help get each person the right opportunities to advance.

  • Enthusiastically participate in team activities, even the silly ones like “would you rather” icebreakers in retros and grading how well a meeting organizer times their press of the “End Meeting” button on Zoom.


What you should bring with you

  • 7+ years technical professional experience as an engineer, technical lead, or manager.

  • Engineering management or other leadership experience in an agile environment (of any methodology).

  • Experience delivering cloud-based software.

  • Enough exposure to how a software product business operates to know what “good” looks like. This could be product operations, Salesforce integration, support operations, entitlements management, etc.

  • A track record of using data to understand processes and drive continuous improvement.

  • Excellent active listening, negotiation, and robust dialogue skills across communication styles and levels and on remote/hybrid teams.

  • Ability to empower and inspire a diverse set of engineers to a common goal and appreciate individuals for their unique contributions.


How the team works

  • Languages: mostly Golang and Javascript, a tiny bit of Python.
  • Platform: Kubernetes, GCP, CircleCI, GitOps, feature flags via LaunchDarkly. We get features to production quickly AND safely.
  • Observability: Datadog, distributed tracing, log aggregation, smoke tests. We know exactly what’s happening in production.
  • Methodology: Scrum done well. There’s a ton of things we’d like to do; our process helps us quickly decide what we will actually do and then do it.

Our hiring process

We respect your time. You’ll hear from us by the end of the next business day after completing an interview.

We also have a goal that all Expletives have a great manager and have a voice in how their team is run and who runs it. It’s not the shortest process in the industry, but you’ll get to meet nearly everyone you’ll work with day-to-day and your Engineering leadership. New Expletives consistently say our interview process gave them an accurate picture of what it’s like to work here.

Here’s our 3-stage process for this position (5.5 hours total interviewing time):

  1. Chat with a recruiter (30 min)

  2. Video interview with hiring manager (Engineering Director) (60 minutes)

  3. “Virtual onsite interview” (can be scheduled contiguous or broken up, 60 minutes each):

    • Engineering leadership (VP Engineering and another Engineering Director)
    • Team member interview #1 (two of your four existing direct reports)
    • Team member interview #2 (the other two of your four existing direct reports)
    • Team Peer Interview (Product Manager and UX Designer)

Additional notes

Pay range: $150,000 USD to $216,000 USD + bonus eligibility and equity.

We believe in paying transparently and equitably. Your salary will ultimately be based on factors such as your experience, skills, team equity, and market data. You’ll also be eligible for unlimited PTO (which we model and encourage), work location flexibility, up to 24 weeks of parental leave, and really excellent health benefits.

Our headquarters is in Herndon, Virginia, however our team is fully remote, and we have full support for remote interaction. We realize that while there is benefit to in-person interaction, good people don’t all live in Northern Virginia.
