Do you love making complex systems work smoothly? Do your proudest moments come from seeing engineers accomplish big things and grow their careers? If so, read on!
At Expel, we want to make security as accessible as the internet, and build a great SaaS business along the way. To achieve this, we're building a provisioning, onboarding, and monitoring experience that is not just the best in the security industry, but is up to the standard set by the best consumer software products in the world. We have enough of a foundation that one customer recently told us it’s the easiest integration they’ve ever seen in their life – but we aren’t going to stop until every customer has that experience.
We're looking for someone who loves to lead and inspire engineering teams to deliver clean, secure, and sustainable solutions. You’ll get to join a team that is doing great work and enjoys working with each other.
Our engineering leaders value intelligent execution over heroics, innovation through rapid iteration, and being actively inclusive and supportive. We deliver consistently, and we use data to measure quality and drive us to always get better at what we do. If this sounds like the kind of team you'd like to join, we’d love to hear from you!
Drop you into the middle of a fast-growing cybersecurity-focused technology company with some of the most enthusiastic customers and engineers you’ve ever seen.
Place you at the helm of a team of engineers who care deeply about quality, innovation, community, and technical excellence.
Give you an opportunity to have a strategic impact on the business.
Guide the daily work of up to 7 software engineers working on one or two teams.
Collaborate with the PM, UX, and Quality representatives on your feature teams to align and contribute to the team strategy, set expectations on delivery, engage in healthy dialogue, and ship great software that achieves the team’s goals.
Provide coaching and feedback to engineers. You’re passionate about understanding the people on your team and their career journeys, and you help get each person the right opportunities to advance.
Enthusiastically participate in team activities, even the silly ones like “would you rather” icebreakers in retros and grading how well a meeting organizer times their press of the “End Meeting” button on Zoom.
7+ years technical professional experience as an engineer, technical lead, or manager.
Engineering management or other leadership experience in an agile environment (of any methodology).
Experience delivering cloud-based software.
Enough exposure to how a software product business operates to know what “good” looks like. This could be product operations, Salesforce integration, support operations, entitlements management, etc.
A track record of using data to understand processes and drive continuous improvement.
Excellent active listening, negotiation, and robust dialogue skills across communication styles and levels and on remote/hybrid teams.
Ability to empower and inspire a diverse set of engineers to a common goal and appreciate individuals for their unique contributions.
We respect your time. You’ll hear from us by the end of the next business day after completing an interview.
We also have a goal that all Expletives have a great manager and have a voice in how their team is run and who runs it. It’s not the shortest process in the industry, but you’ll get to meet nearly everyone you’ll work with day-to-day and your Engineering leadership. New Expletives consistently say our interview process gave them an accurate picture of what it’s like to work here.
Here’s our 3-stage process for this position (5.5 hours total interviewing time):
Chat with a recruiter (30 min)
Video interview with hiring manager (Engineering Director) (60 minutes)
“Virtual onsite interview” (can be scheduled contiguous or broken up, 60 minutes each):
Pay range: $150,000 USD to $216,000 USD + bonus eligibility and equity.
We believe in paying transparently and equitably. Your salary will ultimately be based on factors such as your experience, skills, team equity, and market data. You’ll also be eligible for unlimited PTO (which we model and encourage), work location flexibility, up to 24 weeks of parental leave, and really excellent health benefits.
Our headquarters is in Herndon, Virginia, however our team is fully remote, and we have full support for remote interaction. We realize that while there is benefit to in-person interaction, good people don’t all live in Northern Virginia.
At Expel, we ask our crew to provide their covid-19 vaccination status because it’s helpful to understand this data at a company level and we expect that customers, partners, and conferences will start asking us to attest to the vaccination status of our people.
We're an Equal Opportunity Employer: You'll receive consideration for employment without regard to race, sex, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, protected veteran status, or on the basis of disability.
We’re only hiring those authorized to work in the United States.
We’ll ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment. Please contact us to request accommodation.
