What Openai is looking for in applicants

About the Team

The Applied AI Team’s purpose is to commercialize OpenAI’s technology in a manner that leads to broadly beneficial Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) - in particular, by gaining practical experience in deploying these technologies safely. Within Applied AI, Product Policy’s mission is to define acceptable uses of OpenAI’s technology; to work with Detection and Response to ensure that technology is not used in unsafe ways; to advance the set of use-cases that OpenAI can safely permit; and to deliver a great developer experience with respect to safety.

Last year, we introduced GPT-3 as the first technology on the OpenAI API, allowing developers to integrate its ability to understand and generate natural language into their product. More recently, we introduced Codex, a new product that can translate natural language to code. We’re also working to bring other research efforts into the API such as DALL-E, which generates images from text descriptions.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Product Policy manager to own the underlying structure of our policy ecosystem and drive tight integration with both manual and automated enforcement. In partnership with the Head of Product Policy and as an early member of the team, you’ll help shape policy creation and development at OpenAI and make an impact by helping ensure that our groundbreaking technologies are truly used to benefit all people.

The ideal candidate can bring clarity to both the policy and product systems we most need to develop, and can balance short term and long term needs in building them. Ultimately, our ability to actually enforce our product policies will be fundamental to achieving OpenAI’s mission of broad benefits from AGI.

In this role, you will:

  • Drive, define, and deliver the underlying structure of our product policy ecosystem
    • Define the suite of mitigation actions we will need to build to enact nuanced policy at scale.
    • Design a strike tracking / enforcement system that can work both on paper and in tooling, while working with product to ensure it is built
    • Drive the design, development, and implementation of a best-in-class labeling system
    • Build a policy template that can be used to support both current and future enforcement approaches
    • Collaborate with research, engineering, product management and other stakeholder teams to drive product policy design and systems building
    • Reconcile and integrate existing policies with both the new policy ecosystem and existing labeling taxonomies.
  • Create specific policies as needed to address new use cases, new issue areas, and new products
    • Research and weigh the benefits of particular use-cases against their risks
    • Determine and implement appropriate mitigations for particular use-cases (e.g., requiring chatbots to use our Content Filter)
    • Define safety requirements to unlock further use-cases and continue improving the safety of our technology

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have significant experience developing socially-consequential product policies, especially at leading technology- or developer-focused companies, and ideally across multiple companies
  • Have experience aligning diverse sets of stakeholders on specific decisions in the product policy space
  • Can drive operationalizable clarity from qualitative judgments
  • Understand the operational challenges of enforcing product policies, including in the content moderation space, and can incorporate them into policy design
  • Can analyze the benefits and risks of open-ended problem spaces, working both from first-principles and from industry best practices
  • Are familiar with policy and safety/responsibility questions related to AI and/or technology in society

Note that this role involves grappling with questions of sensitive uses of OpenAI’s technology, including at times erotic, violent, or otherwise-disturbing material. At times, this role will involve engaging with such content, as may be necessary to inform our policy approaches.
