About the Role

As a Privacy Engineer, you will develop the tools and methods to enable safe and privacy-preserving operations with sensitive datasets. Your technical expertise is second only to your integrity and passion for security and technology. You will work alongside a diverse team of engineers, developers, and security advisers to design, architect, and drive improvements across OpenAI. We are a small company, and intend to stay small: as a privacy engineer at OpenAI, the decisions you make today will have significant impact on the organization today and into the future.

We’re looking for a privacy specialist who is motivated to bridge the gap between theory and application.

In this role, you will:

  • Design and develop tools and frameworks that support data privacy objectives and mitigate privacy vulnerabilities across OpenAI’s datasets.
  • Evaluate different privacy-preserving techniques for effectiveness including statistical privacy techniques like differential privacy, k-anonymity, l-diversity, data masking, and statistical disclosure controls.
  • Test and measure OpenAI’s datasets for privacy compliance.
  • Collaborate with the Security, IT, Legal, and Research teams drive technical and policy improvements across data access, management, and governance.

You might thrive in this role if you have:

  • Proficiency with a scripting language (e.g. Python, Bash, PowerShell, or similar).
  • Exposure to data processing frameworks (e.g. Apache Spark) and public cloud providers (e.g. Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure).
  • Experience with statistical privacy techniques and methods (e.g. differential privacy).
  • Exposure to privacy and compliance regulations including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).
  • Ability to empathize and collaborate with colleagues, independently manage and run projects, and prioritize efforts for impact.
  • Familiarity with identity and access management (IAM),  cryptography, and encryption platforms.
