We’re looking for a driven backend/platform software engineer who cares deeply about their craft, and who wants to use their skills to bring about positive change in the world. We are working in a high performing organization in the hyper-growth phase, using modern software development approaches. We would like to welcome someone who is comfortable in the rapidly changing nature of a startup environment but also adept at moving relentlessly forward: doing what needs to be done to unblock projects that truly deliver value to our users. We are past the initial startup phase and we care about the balance between new product(s) development, handling technical debt and architecture.

Responsibilities: 

  • Product Engineer: Build and own a set of components that our organization will use to optimize for rapid growth. You do this in collaboration with your team members and internal stakeholders. At the same time you keep the technical debt under control. 
  • Lean and Agile Thinker: Collaborate with cross functional teams (the stakeholders of your team) to distill and synthesize requirements into discreet and meaningful iterations. Work in short feedback loops and learn via data and metrics. Master the use of Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment infrastructure to rapidly prototype and validate ideas.
  • End-to-end Owner: Own your components during the entire lifecycle, from planning, development, (cloud) deployment and maintenance phase. Build scalable and tolerant systems using container technologies (Docker) and cloud infrastructure as code (Heroku, AWS, Terraform…) as well as internal tooling to accelerate product development cycles.
  • Data-driven decision maker:  Influence the roadmap by collecting, using and presenting data. Support data-driven decisions, spot opportunities for improvements and optimizations of our systems. Fit the technical components of your team into the business context of BetterUp.

If you have some or all of the following please apply: 

  • 5+ years relevant experience, at least part of which in a startup environment.
  • Alignment with BetterUp mission of enabling self-driven behavior change.
  • You like to collaborate with colleagues outside your team and understand the complete technical landscape.
  • Succeeded in a remote work environment.
  • Maintainer of your components in production (volume, support, debugging).
  • Strong software engineering practices (e.g. coding, unit testing, code reviews, design documentation, RFC)
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails, Gitflow, Docker.
  • Expert in current web technologies (HTTP, REST, Web Sockets, etc).
  • Experienced in Agile product development processes (SCRUM, Kanban, Lean Startup, etc).
  • Strong verbal and written communication.
  • Experience with distributed systems, databases and data streaming technologies.
