What Messagebird is looking for in applicants

Transform the communications world! Location? You decide!

We’re proud (and excited!) to be transforming the global communications landscape through our Omnichannel Platform-as-a-Service (OPaaS).

Our Birds choose where they work from in the region we’re hiring in — this could be from one of our MessageBird hubs (Amsterdam, Singapore or Bogota) or remotely so long as it’s within a complementary timezone.... Want to work from a rural retreat? Sure, no problem! How about a bustling city getaway for a few weeks? Go ahead!

We understand that “life happens” and give you the freedom to choose the best environment for you to “get s**t done”. We expand our flock without geographical restrictions. This allows us to attract and assemble an industry leading team from a huge variety of backgrounds & cultures,  making us more nimble, creative, and efficient!

How we work

We work fast, grow fast, and build fast. Life at MessageBird moves in fast-forward motion. We’re a team that focuses on making an impact — right from day one. We are go-getters, industry leaders, and dreamers. Risk takers. Roll-up-your-sleeves-and-make-it-happen kind of people. We thrive on transparency, and we value solution-minded attitudes.

We are all driven by one ethos: Get Shit Done. We love shaping things together and leveraging different perspectives, because that makes our products better. Our Birds are empowered with freedom and opportunity; in return, we expect honesty, courage, and agility. We own our work, and sometimes we fail. And then we get back up and cross the finish line — together as a team. Sound refreshing? We think so, too.

The role: SVP of Sales

We are looking for an outstanding Senior Vice President of Sales to head the sales team and lead the revenue-generating activity, a role central to the future success of the business. Working closely with the CRO and CEO, in addition to your primary mission of driving sales you will contribute to the strategy and planning of the Company.

You will drive major sales yourself, and take accountability for the performance of the global sales team - motivating and driving their performance to over-achieve targets through helping develop strategy, driving priorities, pipeline and supporting the product roadmap development.

The SVP of Sales reports to the CRO while working in close partnership with other regional leads and Strategic Partnership teams.

What you’ll do

  • Drive classic “hunting” and “farming” business development activity;
  • Identify and drive new opportunity streams;
  • Be prepared to manage clients through project lifecycle ranging from significant pilots to high value multi-year length engagements;
  • Work in close partnership with the Product Management team to continuously refine our go-to-market approach and ensure our roadmap is market-driven.
  • Scaling: plan and execute the scaling of the company with the goal of the platform and its ecosystem becoming the undisputed industry standard. Understand how to scale both in terms of increasing the market cap and customer base.
  • Lead from the front: clearly communicate the company vision and the revenue strategy across all relevant functions and ensure the right goals are defined and met. Be proactive, not reactive. Manage clients through project life cycles ranging from significant pilots to high value multi-year length engagements;
  • Business acumen: as a business leader first, regularly measure and analyse productivity and effectiveness, create market positioning and define competitive advantages.
  • Data-driven: be a leader in a data-driven culture.
  • Exponential thinking: be comfortable with rapid growth and constant change. Think exponentially ahead.
  • Broad market view: build organization that can handle a wide type of customers - ranging from large scale enterprise to small start-ups.
  • Product first perspective: assume a product centric view where the long term quality of the product is not compromised by short-term requirements from customers. Defend the organization from the easy to pick consulting opportunities in favour of a long term product and ecosystem view. Work in close partnership with the Product Management team to continuously refine our go-to-market approach and ensure our roadmap is market-driven.
  • Results-oriented: assume a long-term, integrated perspective while also striving to drive monthly revenue results – you commit to short-term results, forecast future revenue, and take accountability for both short-term success and longer-term strategy.
  • Team: Hire and mentor a team with various levels of seniority, and across multiple markets, sharing with them with your experience across sales techniques, strategies, and best practices - define performance review rubrics, and conduct performance reviews on a regular basis to provide team members with constructive feedback and recognition for accomplishments, you place a high importance on career development.

What you’ll bring

  • Top-tier intellect and sharp cognitive & analytical capability, able to understand and dissect the business
  • issues of sophisticated data-driven clients;
  • Several years’ operating in a senior sales / business development team management role in a sophisticated technology solutions environment, managing teams of at least ten people covering a large geographical area and/or a broad range of different products;
  • Experience in over-performing against challenging targets primarily in positions where you will have been personally accountable for delivery of sales (rather than by managing teams);
  • A successful track record selling technology solutions, packaged and/or productized.
  • Demonstrated a track-record of successful high value ($1m+) complex sales where you were able to identify and uncover client needs and compete against other technology suppliers;
  • A hands-on approach to management, able to directly lead, influence and guide the team through all scale of business opportunities;
  • Excellent judgement with experience in structuring commercial agreements, refining terms and conditions, establishing territory plans, setting & agreeing quotas, and developing compensation plans;
  • Equally comfort with hunting, farming and project managing opportunities – this role does not have an ‘army’ of support resources.
  • Demonstrates creative and critical thinking skills
  • Possesses a combination of entrepreneurial spirit and strong commercial acumen demonstrated through the ability to drive opportunities with the right balance of tactical and strategic thinking;
  • Can develop relationships and close deals at all levels across organizations. You will be as comfortable talking to C-suite executives as you would be making a presentation to a potential client or partner at the low-to-mid-management level;
  • Has excellent communication skills with an ability to express thoughts logically and succinctly, possessing ‘gravitas’ and a natural senior persona totally at home in boardrooms, recognizable as a peer by senior executives within clients and partner organizations;
  • Has experience building a well-organised, tracked, and managed sales ‘machine’ that is able to dramatically scale an EMEA business.
  • Would be considered intellectually sharp and highly numerate able to understand and dissect the business issues of sophisticated data-driven clients, and to evolve complex data and technology solutions through multiple client and internal iterations;
  • Has an energetic positive working style, a high work rate, and a “no excuses” approach to leading and driving sales organizations to success;
  • Be able to inspire and direct work streams to team members and colleagues and achieve outstanding results without needing to micro-manage.
  • Is a team player.
