The MongoDB R&D Productivity group provides a highly leveraged foundation of shared tools and services that support our product development process. We succeed when MongoDB product and engineering teams are able to deliver the best solutions to our customers through a highly effective software development process.

To achieve our goal, we research, develop and operate a core set of internally developed systems - including our home-grown Evergreen CI platform, image and host management software, and release pipeline technology. In addition to core CI/CD capabilities, we also develop our own software performance pipeline tooling, allowing all R&D teams to leverage innovative approaches to performance, load, and stress benchmarking. Together, we deliver an effective self-service experience for building, testing, performance analyzing, packaging and releasing all MongoDB products. 

We are looking for an exceptional engineering leader to come and lead the MongoDB R&D Productivity group. This position reports directly to MongoDB’s CTO, providing close coordination with product and engineering teams as well as Office of the CTO research and best practices efforts. 

This is a rare opportunity to join a company that is leading innovation in a $80B+ market. The position will be based in our New York City office or remotely in North America.

Successful candidates will have many of the following qualities

  • At least 5 years of experience in a management position. A manager of engineering managers is required for at least 3 of those years
  • Proven success with hiring for, mentoring, and growing strong globally distributed software engineering teams
  • Committed to building and fostering a diverse and supportive culture
  • Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills and desire for cross-team collaboration
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to make and evaluate realistic assessments of project complexity
  • Passion for leading teams with both development and operational ownership. 
  • Proven success working with product management in evolving and scaling large software systems, especially those with software engineers as consumers
  • Familiar with scaling both self-hosted and cloud solutions, including: AWS, EKS, ECS, Kubernetes 
  • At least 7 years of experience in development and operations
  • Active knowledge in tools, systems, and processes impacting developer productivity, including leveraging analytics to measure developer productivity and operational health 

Position Expectations

  • Contribute ideas and work with Product Management as well as technical and senior leadership to build a roadmap for the team’s deliverables
  • Scale systems and tools to meet business objectives
  • Facilitate a healthy SDLC, including timely execution of projects
  • Appropriately allocate team resources, balancing efforts between building new features and supporting/maintaining previous releases.
  • Grow your organization, ensuring desirable skill composition, high job satisfaction and vibrant culture
  • Delegate effectively, splitting your time between technical and management aspects of the position

Success Measures

Within 3 months:

  • Understand the mission, vision for your organization
  • Meet and learn about your stakeholder teams in the R&D organization
  • Know your team members’ strengths and professional objectives
  • Understand and be able to explain your software ecosystem at a high level
  • Contribute in technical discussions and provide meaningful reviews of team members’ technical documents based on your prior experience

Within 6 months:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of your group’s roadmap
  • Gain a deeper understanding of both organizational and system scaling challenges
  • Ensure key metrics are being met by services delivered
  • Ensure team delivers with high quality and predictability
  • Supervise the quarterly and annual planning process for your team
  • Establish working professional relationships with other key leaders and stakeholders
  • Mentor team leaders
  • Supervise hiring and retention for your team

Within 12 months:

  • Coauthor a vision for the future of your organization, working with all product and engineering leaders
  • Craft a plan to execute that vision along with planning for team growth
  • Represent the R&D Productivity group’s interests and work with other stakeholders to balance priorities among requests from other teams to support the organization’s quarterly and yearly roadmaps
  • Drive experiments and changes to procedures and processes to optimize team velocity and scaling
