Engineering Manager

About the role

We’re looking for our initial Engineering Leader to lead teams in our new conversation space, who loves getting the best out of people and sweating the details. All of the little things that make a powerful product simple and delightful.

As an Engineering Manager, you’ll be responsible for leading engineering teams and collaborating with Product & Design to set goals, milestones, and to synthesize customer stories into development plans. You will be responsible for guiding architectural decisions, ensuring excellent engineering quality, coach Technical Leads that report to you, and mentor engineers to do their best work! 

You’ll support a wide range of technologies, from real-time messaging infrastructure that supports millions of concurrent users, to engaging experiences that help buyers to businesses in real-time, to machine learning systems that analyze and surface insights from billions of events.

What will you be doing:

  • Drive the hiring and development of this initial team and then manage, mentor and provide career growth guidance for teams of 25+ engineers
  • Manage, mentor and provide career growth guidance for teams of ~25 engineers
  • Be a player+coach with expertise to provide guidance during code, design, and architecture reviews
  • Be comfortable finding the balance taking ownership of the team’s deliverables while giving teams the space to own their work
  • Be part of a product leadership team building the right people and process foundations for scale
  • Jump in and help the team deliver features when it is required
  • Be passionate about technology and stay on top of new developments
  • Help teams  balance technical debt vs. feature development vs. supporting customers
  • Provide visibility into your work on an ongoing basis to  Engineering leadership in order to provide visibility to your progress on your goals.

About you and the skills you’ll need:

  • Bachelor's degree in CS or equivalent
  • 8+ years of technical experience with at least 2 years managerial experience
  • Demonstrated track record of managing and leading teams through successful product release cycles
  • Operate as a hands-on leader with the ability to conduct architecture and design reviews
  • Experience presenting in public, at events, online webinars, meetups and other forums, including at the campus and university level, to support thought leadership, company messaging and presence in the local and regional market.
