BetterUp’s SPEAR (Science for Product Effectiveness and Assessment Research) function is seeking an innovative Quantitative Behavioral Scientist who is passionate about advancing human transformation and whole person flourishing at an unparalleled scale. In this role, you will design and implement product-centered, assessment-fueled research to generate key insights for individuals, teams, and organizations to allow each and every person to achieve their best. You will manage and execute studies that evaluate and optimize the efficacy of product interventions. You’ll draw on your budding experience as an applied social scientist and data storyteller to succeed as a pragmatic, passionate researcher.

For this role, we are seeking talented individuals who have worked for at least 3 years as a full-time applied researcher in an industry setting; required and preferred experiences are further outlined below. 

What you’ll do:

  • Design and develop innovative, development-centric assessment tools, including psychometrics, validation, reporting, analytics, and data modeling.
  • Design and run innovative product research spanning disciplines and modalities to answer fundamental questions about improving personal and professional wellbeing.
  • Analyze behavioral data uniquely high in veracity, volume, and variety to generate client insights and individualized precision development via the BetterUp product and platform.
  • Develop and execute against best practices for collaboration, maintenance, aggregate sense-making, knowledge cumulation, and reporting of applied analytics projects.
  • Craft and execute methodologies for creatively analyzing and extracting insights from large-scale trace/behavioral, qualitative/open-ended, longitudinal, and group-level data, while simultaneously advancing our analytics to further frontiers as new data sources come online.
  • Produce written and visual reports of findings for internal audiences, for selected clients as an behavioral science and assessment expert, and for conferences and academic publications.
  • Distribute and provide guidance on analytics activities, to team interns and contractors. 
  • Study and surface significant emerging findings from multiple behavioral disciplines (applied psychology; computational/data science; behavioral economics; cognitive neuroscience; health science) to inform product strategy and other relevant business decisions.

If you have some or all of the following, please apply:

  • Advanced degree (PhD required) in a behavioral science or social discipline (e.g., industrial/organizational, experimental, clinical, or educational psychology; public health, cognitive neuroscience, behavioral economics, computational social science), with a heavy quantitative focus for this training.
  • Required: At least 3 years (5-6 preferred) of relevant industry (non-academic, full-time, post-graduation) experience as an applied researcher. 
  • Strong capability in and deep experience with R as a toolset for data access, statistical analysis, visualization, and automated reporting in the context of research and large/diverse/evolving datasets. Experience with SQL and/or Looker preferred.
  • Strong capability in inspecting, cleaning, merging, and transforming large and evolving data from technology-delivered products.
  • Experience building and ensuring interpretability for statistical models, including hierarchical/multilevel models, cross-validation, and optimization. 
  • Expertise in human behavioral data psychometrics and analysis. Experience with gamification and NLP techniques for developmental assessments (e.g., tests producing robust growth recommendations, 360-degree feedback) and learning applications preferred. 
  • Proficient in basic theory and implementation of data visualization. Experience building dynamic visualizations in interactive dashboards (e.g., R Shiny, Python Dash) preferred.
  • Proficient in Qualtrics. Experience building data pipelines using the Qualtrics API preferred.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills as exhibited by a strong ability to clearly communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences. 
  • Demonstrated passion for continued learning and advancement drawing on inspiration gained from cross-disciplinary information sources.
