About This Role
Strava is the leading social platform for athletes and the largest sports community in the world, with over 85 million athletes in 195 countries. If you sweat you’re an athlete, and Strava’s mobile apps and website connect millions of active people every day!
This role is on the Strava Communications & Personalization Team, a team with a diverse skill set who work together on the infrastructure, libraries, and tools that handle mobile notifications, emails, and personalization/targeting capabilities. We send over 20 million transactional emails a week and roughly 100 million notifications a week through the platform and infrastructure that this team maintains.
Our systems are used by all engineers at Strava to create touch points with athletes in various stages of their feature lifecycle. Engineers on the Communications & Personalization Team work on a very wide variety of projects and technologies; recent projects have ranged from re-architecting and upgrading our notification infrastructure to building a pacing system for targeting in-app promotions to users.
We build our software as microservices written in Scala. While we do not require Scala knowledge before joining, we are looking for candidates who have experience with service oriented architecture.
You’re excited about this opportunity because you will:
Write high-quality production code that enables our engineers to send timely and personalized communications to millions of athletes on Strava
Provide technical leadership on the team
Collaborate daily with partners in product and design to implement the team roadmap
Foster an engineering culture which makes your peers feel understood and included
Having passion and curiosity towards building an emphatic communications experience for our athletes
Building well documented and easy-to-use systems that are quickly and widely adopted across our engineering organization
Collaborating with our internal partners in product, design, marketing, analytics, and support
Mentoring other engineers and up-leveling the organization by writing blog posts and giving tech talks about your work.
Building services in a production environment (using languages like Ruby, Java, Python, Scala, or similar)
Managing cloud based infrastructure (using AWS, Azure, or similar)
Working with relational or NoSQL databases in Production (we use MySQL, Redis, Cassandra, and Scylla)
Open source distributed systems technologies. We use Kafka, ZooKeeper, Finagle, Storm, Spark, Elasticsearch, Mesos, and Docker.
Awareness of general coding best practices, documentation, and testing
