About the role

Staff Engineer is a technical leadership position at Strava. Your goal is to leverage your technical depth and breadth to have a broad impact on the organization. As part of one of our product development teams, you’ll be collaborating daily with cross-functional partners in product, design, research, analytics, and marketing. Your projects will be a healthy mix of upgrading existing systems and designing the architecture for new functionality. Our backend stack is written in Ruby and Scala, but you don’t need experience with those languages to be successful.

You’re excited about this opportunity because you will:

  • Partner with an Engineering Manager to define the technical vision for a team and implement that vision

  • Build and scale features for more than 75 million registered athletes making 21 million uploads per week

  • Raise the level of your team by creating processes, tools, and systems that increase the productivity and output of the entire team around you

  • Collaborate with other Staff Engineers and teams to set the overall technical direction for the company and establish best practices.

You will be successful here by:

  • Incorporating viewpoints and perspectives of broad groups across the company to ensure that engineering work is well-aligned with the business

  • Mentoring other engineers and upleveling the organization by writing blog posts and giving tech talks about your work.

We’re excited about you because you:

  • Have 7+ years of professional software development experience or equivalent wisdom

  • Have experience working as a backend developer for a software company operating at scale (i.e. 1 million or more monthly active users)

  • Have deep expertise with Scala or a similar language (e.g. Java, Go, Ruby, Python)
